You are going to replace the seal anyway, use heat from mild to wild, focus on the pully, not the shaft.

yes, heat with rosebud quick with tension on puller. might need larger puller. plus smack the end of puller once hot. long as dont crack pulley , as a brg. splitter fits behind the whole pulley.

I agree heat and hitting the end of the puller bolt, like smacking it sharply with at least a 2 pound hammer as if you were driving a railroad spike. Even making sure the crank is pried forward so you have any crank end play working for you. How smooth are the cuts of the puller you made in the groove? Best scenario would be if you somehow found a pre-cut circle. If they are rough cut with a torch I hope you spent a fair bit of time smoothing them with a grinder. Any roughness like slag against the pulley groove will create a pressure point increasing the likelihood of breaking the pulley. Second is that just a blank center in the end of the crank? If so you are probably okay, if it is a threaded hole you better get a plate on there or center drill a soft bolt to slip in there. Also some grease on the contact spot and lube up those puller threads. Never been around one of those gas start diesels, that Inj. pump drive gear looks pretty gooie! I just found a scanned copy of an IH M service manual. It has a section on the Diesel engine, send me an email from Classic if you want a copy, don't want post it here and exploit the source. Clever handle by the way, best of luck!

Thanks to all your comments. This one was too stubborn. First break occured equal half. Took my grinder cut the remaining gear off to allow the timing gear housing to clear. Notched the remaining pulley housing and with my cold chisel split it and with my hand pulled it off. Amazing how a little rust has incredible strength (wedge).

This is a parts engine I am salvaging the timing gears. My Super MD ground up the idler and injector pump gear. No damage to the crank gear. Three chips on the timing gear. Found the idler gear missing the spacer between the bearings which allowed it to fail. Details are so important.

Great outcome of the day. Crank pulley on the running tractor which is being repaired came off with gentle tug!!!

i kinda thought it would break. they usually are not that tight, dam rust! i have heard the saying "rust is my friend" when they DONT want things to move. lol.
