D358 crankshaft

I have acquired a D358 out of a 782 series 2 cotton picker. Everything is in good shape but the engine flooded during hurricane Harvey a couple years ago. Cam is bad. Crank is questionable. It may polish out.

I’ve seen some reman cranks and also some kits that have oversized bearings. Is this crank grindeable ? The little brother 4 cylinder cranks in the 84 series tractors to this are not as they are to hard. I thought this 6 was the same way but might be wrong.

Any insight to this 358 crank and possibly grinding it to clean it up

Thanks, Ryan

A good Machine shop with a person that knows what he is doing can grind it as if they offer under sized bearing then someone is grinding them. Now your mickey mouse shops that do not want to spend the money on the correct stones may tell you this . what you can't do is WELD them. Crank grinding is becoming a lots art due to the fact that in order to afford to grind cranks you need to have one man that is all that he does and a volume of cranks coming in . Because of the cost to operate . I had two close that had automotive machine shops one had a crank grinder and welder and the other did not , what the one that did not have a crank grinder did have was way more modern up to date machines . My buddy and i talked about this a bunch about welding and stroking and regrinding and he told me he would need no less then four cranks aday to support a crank set up and the amount of stones one has to keep on hand is unreal and with the redressing of the stones they do not last long as you have to change radius for each different crank keep a sharp stone . Around here we do not have anyone grinding cranks now and only one machine shop that is sending them out and it is a hike to them and a LONG wait to get it back.

Re D358 crankshaft, I have no experience with these crankshafts unlike TV.

See photo below out of IH Engine Service manual about Neuss engines different types of crankshafts and regrinding.

Looks like I can possibly take it down 10 without an issue of rehardening if needed. I’ll check for an N stamp and then go from there. Maybe I won’t need anything maybe I can get by with 10. As long as I can get any rough humps off. Dimples are ok if need be I guess if it saves me from grinding if I can buff them out with a buffer so there are no sharp edges
