806 Diesel Fluid Levels - newbie question #128512;

Ok, I feel dumb for asking but don't really know...

I recently drained all the hy-tran and engine oil out of the 806 diesel.

Then replaced filters, gaskets etc and filled back up per the manual specs, but now when I check the tranny dipstick it says I am overfull and so does the engine oil dipstick.

Not by a bunch, maybe 1/4 each but both are definitely above the "full" mark.

Either the 5 gallon pails lied to me, I can't math, or the dipsticks are wrong.

Should I drain fluid back down to the "full" marks?

I ran the tractor for a bit, followed the air release procedure etc, yet still reading above dipstick full mark.

Is it bad to be overfull on either the hy-tran or crankcase fluid?

I don't think just a little over will hurt anything. I've done it before and have had no problems. Now if it was way up the dipstick it could cause problems in the engine.

A fuzz high on the engine dipstick wont hurt a thing. Significantly,yes.Run the tractor,see what kind of oil consumption it has.Either none,2 or more qts a day or anyplace in-between. It is common to run the rear ends 5 gallons overfull as an o ring can suck air(but not leal oil). Overfull keeps the oring submerged.Long explanation for a later time.

the dip stick is a guide and nothing saying the oil must be at the full line. 1/4 " either way will not hurt a thing. look how far away the low or add marks are from the full mark. any time i change oil in an engine the oil is always a hair over the full mark when adding the specified amount of oil. keeping the oil at the full mark also helps with engine cooling.

Did you start the tractor after filling with oil? If not, the filters are still empty. Once the filters are full, the "excess" oil will be gone and you will be right at the full mark.

Same goes with the hydraulics. Once the filter housing is filled, the level will be right where it should be.

Either way, the engine probably burns and/or leaks a little oil, as do the hydraulics. You will need to top them off periodically as you use the tractor.

I would not worry about a bit over or under. The transmission is recommended to run 5 gallon over full for the o-ring leak as has already been said. When you drain the transmission/hydraulic there are 5 plugs to remove. one is up above the drawbar then one each side of that . The other 2 are up front. One is under where the clutch brake shaft swivels and then back a bit from there. For the oil and fuel filters don't over tighten the lidsnand distort the covers or the filter canisters.
