Still having issues with rear main seal for H.

Ive been messing with the rear main on my H rebuild for about a week now and its holding my progress up. I understand the felt seals are supposed to be hard to install but I cannot fathom how the one I got is supposed to seat all the way. Its almost 1/4in wider than the one I took out, and even soaking it with oil does not make it easier to install. My H is a '40, could the part number possibly be different for the rear main of that year? Maybe I accidentally got ones for an M? Or these are just defects? Any hints or tricks or possible replacement parts #'s you guys might have would be appreciated. Probably going to order another set of seals because Ive mangled these ones trying to install them.

Soak the new seal in engine oil over night and then install it. Use a smooth as large as you can find pipe or shaft to roll and flatten the seal into the cap. Finally take a very sharp razor blade to trim the seal at the parting line. Just do not cut it even with the parting line. Leave just a little more so it is pressed into the half of the seal that will seal the parting edge.

Use a 1 inch flex blade putty knife (or two)to squeeze it against one side as you work it into the groove, Oil is your friend it must be saturated. Then with the pipe. Once in it needs to be cut as noted 1/16" above mating surface. Jim

Looks normal to me. Stuff it in starting at the ends. Make it even with retainer. No cutting off. Roll on crank or a shaft of very close to same size as crank. I always use a screwdriver to push in place. Learned that the hard way.
