I need to change the hydraulic oil in my 574 and was wondering if 303 tractor oil from ORieleys would be ok? Also, any suggestions for a filter or should I just have one shipped from the dealership?
Thoughts and advice is appreciated!

I run it in my 584 and have for years. No problems so far. Im no expert but older tractors seem to do okay on 303 . Others may no more .

That cheap oil is not recommended by IH. For a few dollars more you can buy the better grade that is. I don't use it in my 574, too many expensive parts in there.

We have used generic oil in ours for years. That poor tractor has been used and abused for decades. Dairy cows leave little time for maintenance. It had to run everyday 7days a week. Seems to be alright with it. As for the filter Any reputable filter is fine. IH,Napa,Wix,Baldwin. We have used Fleet guard and Baldwin for decades also. The filter being changed regularly is more important than the brand. This goes for the oil also. It is a simple system on those older tractors.

Somewhat my problem is that the dealership is two hours one way from me. Is there a better brand, other than hytran, out there?

Highwayman I call BS on all that. Ours has had only oil that is supposed to meet the hytran spec in it for over 40 years with no issues with PTO and Brakes. When new the PTO clutch went out they said the pressure was not set right. Dad asked how do you know if it is right has had a gage on it since to see when you turn it on. I now finally after over 45 years is now in need of a possible brake lining. I need to get it in this winter and look at it. Not a just before dinner job. Will take till supper to do.

Currently we are using either a private label oil, or a Citgo tractor hydraulic fluid. The private label oil is from Lyden oil in Lansing MI. Which I believe is also in OH and maybe PA. The reason I say this is because my brother bought a 7140 with power shift. And I wanted to be able to either use the current oil, or else use the Hytran from the Dealer. I did not want problems with the transmission from using s lesser oil. They assured me the both oils meet the specs for our tractors. More than that I would have to ask my distributor. We also buy oil by the barrel not in pails.

Those utility tractors have wet brakes and crap oil will make the linings come apart. 303 is a spec JD used i. The 2 cylinder era and went to something else when the 30-4010s came out because they had wet brakes too.
I use Napa premium or shell spinex which is sold by local case dealer. Both around $55 a pail. I’d much rather spend an extra $40 -$50 on an oil change than have to pull wrenches. Especially at my age.
