H's came with the Monroe shock absorber seat soon after WW2-'46-47 era. The first ones had an extended seat bracket and the shock was mounted to the rear of the seat and was longer than the one mounted forward of the seat on the later versions. It was a popular conversion for a lot of different tractors to get the Monroe seats and don't kid yourselves-they were a real improvement over the older non-shock type seats that came on the tractors before then. Many times this skinny kid got pitched into the steering wheel on the seat rebound after hopping a furrow or like bump on H's with that d----d old no shock seat.

Hey,Red H man, I have two 1944 H's and I have both styles of seat. The pipe-toolbox is what is on our 1939M so...they were optional it would appear. I see in the H manual that you could order different springs for the spring type seat depending how large you were...I'd need the heavy duty one!!!Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael, IH only carries the heavy duty one these days. You will sit so high that you will need an oxygen mask!

Looking through the "Farmall Model H Photo Archive" book, the prevalant seat for 1941 is the curved pipe with the tool box. I don't know when the spring seat with shock absorber became available. My Grandpa's 1941 H seat has the curved pipe with tool box.
