I read on this site that one of the things to beware is a noisy transmission in 1st and
reverse, well mine is and with top off and wheel jacked up and turning even by hand in
1st and reverse there is noticeable noise but I cannot see any slop or feel any play in
anything, gears look fine, so what is the usual cause of this problem ? thanks
 
They tend to be noisy in low & reverse. Low is the gear that gets used most for plowing & disking, so it gets a lot of hard use from normal hard work wear. (Remember, these tractors were designed to work hard & they did in the day.) Reverse uses the same gear cluster so it will tend to be wear noisy too. If there is no severe tooth decay (visible chips or missing teeth) the tranny will probably last longer than you will, unless you're going to be on it a lot & using it for field work every day all season long. Run 85-90 gear lube in it & enjoy your noisy Cub. It's noise is it's badge of honor. I love my noisy old girl to death.
 
Here is an old hot rodder trick to make thing less noisy. Pt some graphite power in with the oil. I like to use the heavier 85W-140 where there is no hyds

Not really suggesting it but my dad mentioned that an old timers trick from back in the 1930's was a handful of saw dust! :shock:
 
That was common way to pass off a n car/truck with a noisy transmission that was up for sale
