IH 500 wiring problem

I have a 1968 IH 500 diesel with a BD154 engine. It needs steering clutch work but moves forward and back right now and was running until the other day. Got a new commercial battery and it wont turn over. I found a melted wire going to the ammeter. At some point a previous owner must have had the same problem because I see this wire was replaced in the past. After closer inspection there are a number of cut or broken wires visible. The old generator had been replaced with an alternator but I am worried that it was not done correctly and that might be the problem here. It was impossible to see what was going on so I pulled out the fuel tank and plan on replacing the majority of the wiring on the tractor while I have easy access. I have the factory wiring diagrams but I am not sure exactly how to work in the alternator instead of the generator and regulator. I am also not sure of what gauge wire to use and where. There are not many wires in this machine but I certainly do not want to make things worse and would be grateful for any wisdom you all can share.

This diagram does not interact with the glow plugs, so they are not shown. The oil pressure switch is "T"ed into the oil pressure gallery where
the oil pressure switch is attached. Jim

This is what I came up with. I plan on putting a 10A fuse between before the light switch and I was going to put a 20A circuit breaker between the ignition and the starter. I am not sure what the output of that alternator is or if it is even working now. I may need to replace it. Do you think that the 20A circuit breaker is enough or should I be looking at something bigger?
