Carburetor Cleaner

These are school-boy questions, but the last time I had to clean out my Farmall carbs was early 2000's (been on a hiatus) and I used a chemical bath, like Gunk. Unfortunately, years of neglect left one of my carbs 'varnished.' My questions:
1. What do you recommend to clean the carb housing before installing the new parts?
2. The little air bleed screw slot is slightly damaged but the rest of it looks fine - leave in, or do you have an easy way to remove? I think the varnish has it stuck in there, and I wasn't patient enough to clean it up before trying to remove the air bleed.

Thanks.

I have a can of Berry Man's carb clean but it is old so a lot better then what you can get now days. You can still get some of the newer stuff but it takes longs. I also use spray carb cleaner like the O'Reilly's brand stuff and a torch tip cleaner tool to poke out all the passage ways. I leave all the jets in place since on most to try to remove them does more harm then good. Soak carb over night spray out with carb cleaner spray. Blow out with air then spray poke and blow 2 or 3 more times

If you have access to an Ultra Sonic cleaner this would be good to use and then the carb cleaner from O'Reily's after it has been in the cleaner. Harbor freight has a fairly good one for $65.
I have found using some heat from a propane torch works wonders to soften the varnish when removing jets, emulsion tubes and etc.

gunk is what I use.

ooh no its gonna leak out now!

Acetone and B12 carburetor cleaner or the equivalent.
Let it soak for a few days.

Have cleaned several carburetors and fuel bowls with it that were pretty much destroyed I thought.

I use slow cooker with dawn dish soap, water and if rusty add a little vinegar.
Sonic cleaner would be nice from what I have heard.

im with Duner wi , that is the cheapest and works great.. i also have a harbor freight ut cleaner it works good . i normally boil the water /soap be fore i use it..
