I have a 1968 IH 500 diesel with a BD154 engine. It needs steering clutch work but moves forward and back right now and was running until the other day. Got a new commercial battery and it wont turn over. I found a melted wire going to the ammeter. At some point a previous owner must have had the same problem because I see this wire was replaced in the past. After closer inspection there are a number of cut or broken wires visible. The old generator had been replaced with an alternator but I am worried that it was not done correctly and that might be the problem here. It was impossible to see what was going on so I pulled out the fuel tank and plan on replacing the majority of the wiring on the tractor while I have easy access. I have the factory wiring diagrams but I am not sure exactly how to work in the alternator instead of the generator and regulator. I am also not sure of what gauge wire to use and where. There are not many wires in this machine but I certainly do not want to make things worse and would be grateful for any wisdom you all can share.
