460 relief valve

I have been having issues with the tractor always being under load and have decided it is most likely the screen in the relief valve I have pulled the valve body off and taken it apart but have been unable to unscrew the seat I have taken a chisel and ground it down to make a tool but it still will not turn even with a wrench on it any advice? Also if I can get it apart it seems the advice is to not put the ball back in is that correct thanks

As pointed out that screen is collapsed. It looks torn at the end closest to the fitting. Clean it, and solder it back in place, or buy a new one. Leave the ball out. run a .035" drill through the orifice, #65 drill Jim

Thanks Jim but that picture is from an different post my issue now is just getting it apart any trick to unscrew the seat ?

Thanks I've got one of those already but the blade is maybe 3/8 at best and the ball is about the same size so I don't think it will catch enough of the edges to work I've ground down a 7/8 cold chisel to fit the slot but can't turn it with a wrench on it

You are talking about the actual unloading valve under the unloading piston. We had the proper tool from IH service tools but I have taken a tie rod end tool and ground the center out to clear the ball when tool was not available. Nothing down there really if no crap under ball and you are able to depress the ball down a ways.

Thanks Pete that explains why I was having so much trouble with something that sounded fairly simple I’ll tackle it tonight

Thanks Pete that would explain why I was having so trouble with what sounded fairly simple I’ll tackle it tonight

NOW, to be clear here. The ball we talk about taking out is a very tiny ball that is in the screened orifice, right under the screw driver slot and held in with a roll pin. Was original equipment on a 4 or 560 but not earlier model tractors or replacement screened orifices.

The ball down below that unloader piston has to remain in place for system to operate.

I probably would of figured that out if I had been able to get the unloader valve apart as that one is pretty big I was able to take the screen out and looks like somebody already removed that ball anyway I cleaned everything up and put back together and reinstalled but now have no hydraulics at all hopefully it’s just air locked

Just going to throw this out there..... When I first started really using my 460 I needed all three spool valves on double acting (two of them were set on single acting). While adjusting them, I noticed the tractor would load up when one of the valves was aligned where it "should" be for double acting. I turned it back a few degrees and it stopped. That one valve wanted to be lined up different for whatever reason. I didn't investigate further as to why. All three spools have worked fine since that time.

I'm not saying that's what your problem is but if going through the relief valve doesn't yield any results it's something else to check.
