tractor was bought couple of years ago. hard to start, first time during the day.
had head rebuilt. still hard to start first time. cut gas off at tank. open up and try to start. puff of black smoke, first time it hits. acts and looks to me like it is almost flooded. tried to choke it to get it to start. slows it down, from starting. yesterday, i did not choke it and it started quicker. black smoke came first. hmmm

it takes several times, of cranking, to start. then starts fine rest of day.

When shutting down, shut the fuel off and let it quit. then when starting it, turn on the fuel and start within a sort time.
it sounds flooded. Jim

Rebuild the carb. They are not that complicated to work on, not like a
rochester four barrel.
Basically same as the venerable old A. Make sure your fuel tank is clean
and the fuel shut off as well. Happy starting.

Rebuild the carb. They are not hard to do. Pay attention to the float and float height
make sure tank and fuel shut off are clean as well. The 140 is just like the A
they are easy starting tractors

I've seen that first time hard to start symptom on a couple of other tractors converted from generator to alternator, positive to negative ground and not reversing the coil connections.

If positive ground, + on coil should go to side of distributor, if negative ground - on coil to side of distributor.

Might also check for excess resistance in switch to coil wire.

it is an old coil.. do not see a mark on it. is there a way to tell , which is + or - without the marks?
