The starter on my 400w just gave up the ghost. I'm not sure what is wrong; I hooked it up to an amperage meter and it pulls down excessively and won't even begin to turn. I have located a starter from a 400 diesal. Mine is a gas tractor, does anyone know if the two starters are interchangeable?

I had the starter for my 300U rebuilt a couple weeks ago for $65. Wouldn't turn on the tractor, but when I took it out and put it on a bench and hooked a battery to it, it ran fine. Turned out the bushings were shot. My theory is that the side pressure from engaging the ring gear caused the bushings to bind and prevented the starter from turning. The guy who rebuilt it gave me the option of just replacing bushings or a total rebuild. I opted for a rebuild wo I wouldn't have to worry about it again.

It sounds like the windings are shot. Time to get a new one. As for the interchangability, I am not sure.

Good luck

I don't believe I'd be so quick to throw this one out. Give the poor thing a chance! You wouldn't know its problem until it's been opened and properly diagnosed. I've had the original starters from my Cub and my B rebuilt at a local generator shop. I'd a lot rather have the originals than new ones. The rebuild for the B was $40.69. Itemized, it came out to $12.50 for a set of brushes, two bushings for $5.00, labor at $20.00, and tax $3.19. The cost for the Cub was similar. If the original starter lasted for forty or fifty years, the rebuild should give about as long. I shouldn't have to fool with it again during my life. Let us know what you decide to do. I'll look forward to hearing how it turns out.

You should be able to get it rebuilt for a reasonable price. I just got a starter for a Super C rebuilt for less than $70.00 and it had a broken armature shaft. The guy at the automotive electric place which rebuilt it told me that he can rebuild most American made starters so long as I bring him the outside case.

Thanks to everyone who posted some info. for me. I solved the problem by buying a starter from a wreckers. I needed the tractor immediately since it is my only tractor with a loader. I'll get the other starter looked at by an agri-auto sometime in the future.
