IH 424-Educate Me

A friend of mine has been offered an International 424 for a partial trade for a car he has for sale and asked for my opinion. I'm a John Deere guy and don't know as much about red tractors. It is a diesel, from the photos he sent the tires look decent. Sheet metal not too bad, but the paint is faded. Needs a generator but a new one is included in the deal. Has a front end loader but it is supposedly junk.

How is parts availability for these tractors? Do they start good cold, or are they like a 460 diesel lol? Besides the obvious (no bad noises in gears, hydraulics work, brakes work, etc) anything specific to look at?

From his asking price on the car, he would be giving $2500 for this tractor. Sound in the ballpark?

Location Mid Missouri.

Thanks!

We had one for many years. It was powerful for its size and quite nimble. We had a snow plow for it, but it could be slow to start when very cold. Ours cracked between the cylinders and water got into the oil or we would still have it. It was happiest pulling 3 14" plows.

Mine is a gas burner . It was built in 1966 . tough as nails . I have no experience with the diesel model . Sounds a little pricey to me but I have no idea what it is worth . I would check the lift out well as new pumps are pricey . New one or mine is around $ 600 .00

If you convert it to the Bosch pencil type glow plugs, I think you will find that cold starts are not a problem. Been there. The difference is amazing.
