magneto question

Is it possible for a magneto to fire if the impulse isn't working. I'm wondering if it will fire if I tow the tractor to get some higher rpms than just using the starter although 12 volts spins that thing pretty fast. I can't get a spark on my new to me BN and I can't tell if the impulse is working. The tractor has some add ons so its tough to turn the engine by hand. I had no spark last fall and found out the condenser was bad. I had one that gave me spark then but now nothing. Points are clean. I've never heard this tractor run so I can't say what it was doing before I got it. These are the situations where I like having a hand crank but the add ons won't let me use one on this tractor.

Yes, it is.

The impulse serves two purposes, it makes for a hotter spark at slow hand-cranking speeds and retards the spark to prevent "kickback".

If you have a well-tuned, easy-starting engine and yank it over with the crank, if the impulse doesn't "catch" there's a CHANCE it will "kick" and try to tear your arm off.

As to your original question, I've had several 6 Volt tractors that were converted to 12 Volt, and they cranked so fast the impulse would "kick out" as they were cranking, but they'd still start.

Previous owner added a hydraulic system to the tractor. Its driven from a double pulley on an alternator he added. All the brackets, etc cover up the hole for the crank and makes the engine hard to turn trying
to move the fan. The guy did a great job of adding hydraulics to a tractor not made for it but it is a real pain to work on the tractor.

I am not familiar with this tractor. Does it have a belt pulley? If so, use the "Twisted Belt" method to start it.

I didn't think about that - it does have a belt pulley. Maybe I can use it to turn the engine by hand since I can't get a crank on it. Thanks

To the question of pull starting, we've had trouble starting a crank start Allis WC and when we hook it up and pull start it it usually takes off.
I'm about to do this again because we are having the same problem.
Waiting for the ground to dry out so we don't skid the tires when pulling.
