Pushrod Cover Help Farmall M

I have the pushrod cover off my M and I'm wondering what to do about a pair of pan head screws I have found threaded into the block. When I removed the cover the bolt hole in question had a 1/4-20 UNC pushed into the hole. The threads for the hole are 5/16-18 UNC. When the cover is installed the bolts can't come out of the hole but I don't know what the hole is for. I am assuming it is a cross drilled hole for an oil passage. Should I thread a 5/16-18 UNC pan head screw in place of the 1/4 - 20 UNC? I can't imagine I want oil pressure dropping from oil leaking into the pushrod covers? What do you have screwed in yours is my question?

Strap in photo is "valve tappet stop", #49027D, held in place by 2 - machine screw, 5/16 x 5/8" N.C. (Round head) Slotted Rd Hd, 5/16"-18 x 5/8".

Parts catalog doesn't show a serial number range that it was used.

Good morning! I am browsing through here and noted an interesting thread. Maybe the strap is considered a tool, not an engine part. It looks to me like it might have been used during engine overhaul work, to keep the lifters in place if the block was turned upside down with head, valves and pushrods already removed. The mechanic would not need to remove the lifters and keep track of which one was which.

What Bob said, still used on SM. Not shown in 400 and 450 parts book but found a few in 400. Lot of them are left out. Sometimes if you don't shake a push rod to break oil suction before pulling it can lift a valve follower out of the bore in a clean engine, or if a push rod breaks it can throw one out. That's the only reason for one but never had a problem if missing.

Thanks Bob! I will see about finding that part or I might just run without it. I happened to notice your cover has three bolts holding it on? mine has 4. Mine is also a 52 so maybe some things changed throughout the years. I know it has had several in frame overhauls so it might have been discarded by someone earlier on.
Thanks,
Steve

Thanks, D Slater I might just run without it. I don't think it will be overly crucial and it's not pulling a plow or disk anymore so I think I might just let it ride.

Thanks again!
Steve
