Cant get my 1946 Farmall Super A to start

Have set valves, added gas, timed the magnito to TDC gapped the points. Rebuilt the governor. Have spark to the plugs. Carb is rebuilt. Fuel is good. Tractor ran okay, but started a little harder than it should last fall. I am not new to much of this. Took the points out of the magnito, put them on the bench for inspection. Looked fine. Reinstalled onto the magnito and she hasn't started since! What am I missing here?

When you took the points out did you only take off the bigger cover or did you take off the little cover too. Removing the gears from behind the small cover that drives the rotor will mess up your firing order
unless you put the gears back correctly. Its not needed to remove that small cover to get to the points. Next question - when you removed the mag cap did you pull all the wires from the cap. If so maybe they
are not back in the correct position. I would get any piston up on top dead center for the compression stroke and see where the rotor is getting ready to fire. I've got a similar situation going on a BN I
bought last fall and I think I put the plug wires on one position off. I'm still waiting on a part so I haven't tried starting since the discovery.

I think you might be on to something there with the magnito gears. I am a curious animal and something tells me I was sniffing around behind that points cover to deep. Are there marks on those gears so I can realign them?
I will check the plug wires again, but I did leave them on the distributor cap and marked them.

With the cap on make a mark on the flange where the cap sets at #1 tower then with the cap off watch when the rotor snaps it should stop at the mark before the impulse that will tell you if the rotor gears are OK. If not you will need to move the gear so it lines up with the mark.

Thank you Gene and Charlie Tractor Guru's! Gonna try taking a look at it tonight. Want to make sure i understand. After the rotor snaps, it should be lined up with the mark for #1 cylinder?

Should be lined up with Mark before rotor (impulse) snaps. You need to
be sure the Piston is on compression stroke not intake stroke.

Below is a link to the official IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual for magnetos.

It covers all aspects of troubleshooting, repairing and installing the mag, timing the rotor gears, timing the mag to the engine, etc..

Yours is an "H-4" when looking up the details.

It's very easy to get 180 degrees out of time if you aren't careful when removing the gear for the rotor button drive. Get the engine on the compression stroke for #1 piston, get the timing mark just before the pointer on the crank pulley and set the drive back on the housing lined for the #1 plug wire on the cap.

Aside from that check compression, make sure your main jet is bench set on the carb (all the way in then 1-2 turns out) and also make sure you have fuel flow to the carb.

Good luck.
