How are you doing thru all this, you and the Nurse. Eating lots of
pumpkins? Would love to hear a story from you.
On a tractor related note I tried to adjust the front wheel bearings on
the BN that I use for mowing as they were very loose and found they have
a groove worn on the back side of the inner bearing. I have ordered two
replacement kits. The grease that was in there was more like tar than
grease. Very stiff. A previous owner had installed zerk fittings in the
dust covers. What's your opinion on that. I think it is a waste of time.

Not the Tractor Vet, but as a fellow BN/Mower owner I would say just putting new bearings and seals in with good wheel bearing grease should be fine.

I did my front wheels for about the same reason this last summer. Hate to admit it was about 25-30 years since I had them off and yes bearings were pretty bad. A couple of the outer races were a bit loose in the hubs. To correct for that I installed them with some Loc-tite. It's not like it's a car going down the road at 70 MPH!

The bearing and seal kits I got had two different thickness felt seals, can't recall off top of my head which I used but the spares are still sitting on the bench if you need to know!

I figure if the last time I worked on those wheels was around 30 years ago I won't be doing it again! I'll leave that for the next guy! Where I'm probably headed don't think I'll need to mow as I hear it's a bit too hot down there!

Here is my take on a grease fitting in the cap , Yep good idea for the outside bearing but sure does not do much for the inside bearing because before you get grease back to it more then likely you will have grease coming out around the cap. Now had you installed the fitting BETWEEN the two into the center cavity then BOTH bearings get some grease and the center stays full of fresh grease. . Not much happening over here in N/E Buckeye land , we are stayen away from EVERYBODY I sure don't need this creeping crud as myself and the War Dept have already had a round of the flu that she picked up someplace as she is around all kinds of walking little germ carriers and she ev en had the flu shot. She still has the cough and what i got went straight into my lungs and is still giving me fits with breathing due to my lungs are already screwed up so i DO NOT NEED this bug . As of yesterday my county is up to 9 as of 2 Pm yesterday with one death sofar. This is subject to change WITH OUT notice. And we still have people not stayen home .

If the gasket is good on the cap the zerk has worked fine using gun grease. I have serviced some for regular service and found the bearings in like new shape.

Your County sounds like a twin to mine here in central Maine. Almost identical statistics. 253 cases in Maine with 3 deaths as of noon today. The vast number of cases are in the very southern 2 counties. This crisis has everyone worried. Keep the faith.
