I am looking at a 1968 544 hydro gas utility with about 4000 hrs. Are there any potential problems with the hydro unit that I could tell from operating it or things I should notice? -thanks, Bret

All i know is water is the No1 enemy of those transmissions, find out if it was changed like the book says !

When it is working it is great. When it fails you might as well junk the tractor if you have to send it out for repair $$$$$.

Checking hydro
With the tractor in low range, step on the foot-n-inch pedal (where the clutch would be if it was a gear drive), move the hydro lever into the blue area of quadrant, half throttle or so, hold the brakes, and let out the f-n-I pedal. A good hydro will overpower the brakes. In high range, same procedure, it should stall the engine. If the hydro starts whining instead of moving, the hydro has a problem.
