Thoughts on Tilt Steering

I've been hunting for information on tilt steering on later IH Farmall series like 06, 56, 26, 66.

-- Was tilt steering an option on all these series, or did it become standard on any?

-- Owners'/users' thoughts on its practicality, durability, efficiency, value?

-- I've also seen on some "COMFORT-POWER STEERING-POSITION" on some steering wheels and believe this is indicative of tilt steering. True? When did IH start marketing it this way (in which year or on which series)?

-- Compare/contrast to competing Deere, Oliver, others?

They had that on the 56 series and yes it was sorta neat when NEW now that they are OLD and WORE out and i am not sure how many parts are avil. any more . Been maybe 25 years ago that i rebuilt one .

Here is a link to the CaseIH parts page for the tilt wheel on an IH 856. You can go to the search by model and
look up all the models you are asking about. Sometimes the searches for particular models are a little tricky. The
site doesn?t view real well with a phone either.
856 tilt steering

Personally, it was never anything other than something to play with while you sat and waited for Dad to load the first wagon of the day. The wheel is only really usable in the middle position.

The tilt wheel on other brands is mostly to put the wheel up out of the way to make it easier to access the seat. Really, it is more of a tilt COLUMN than wheel.

I personally think they are junk. However, they are all 40 to 50 years old.Not sure how they were when they were new. I converted the tilt wheel on my 1256 to non tilt.Used the parts from an 806.Direct bolt on. Even used the 06 throttle handle.

1456 ( 1970 build) that I bought used in 1993 has tilt steering. It was loose and floppy then. I had a bushing made to take up some of the slop. It helped but it is still loose. 756 & 856 ( 1969's) are non- tilt. I much prefer them.

I did some work on mine about 12 years ago. There were still some parts available from Case at that time but they were ungodly expensive. I ended up making what I needed to get by.

The tilt was an option on 56 and 66
series tractors. I fixed mine a couple of
years ago using some shims on the shaft
joint a new bushing. Not hard to do or
expensive just took some time to fit
things together.
