Drove an iIH 274 hi crop that went 14.4 mph. I would like for the tractor to go 18 mph, so without speeding up the engine any more, has any one changed the rear end gears? Either the hi low gears, or transmission?

tractors are for field work. don't know what the purpose of going fast is for. maybe try some larger tires on it. or change the crown and pinion if there is such a thing available for it.

There may be a 'step down' gear available, but I seriously doubt there is a 'step up' gear set available. As was said, tractors were made for working in the field, not raceing down the road.Maybe a set of custom oversized rears(like 38") would get you the speed you want, but they would pretty much ruin it for field work.If you want to do tractor drives,An H with big tires, and speeded up engine probably do the job.

if you have a hi crop you should have 36 inch rears. stepping up to a 38 would increase your speed. you would have to do the math to see if it would increase enough
as in figure out the circumference of each size and the % increase

than apply the same % to the 14.4 mph

in this area many tractors have had much larger tires installed on tractors for increased clearance for ginseng. they get spacer rings cut to adapt to the larger size. some pressed steel rims off MM or Olivers may have the right bolt pattern to go on your 274 but I don't have any info on that and you would have to check

(quoted from post at 13:48:50 03/08/20) I am trying to give the tractor a new life in a tractor ride.
Part of the tractor ride experience should be to slow down. I think that applies to farming vs the hectic urban life today too.

Unless you get a machinist to hob you a new set of gears, there are no gears to change to. A 274 is a unique tractor and not many of them made.

Now, is it truly a "hi crop?" It's an offset tractor designed to replace the 140/Super A cultivating tractor so by design it has more clearance than normal.

It should have 12.4x24 rears on it from the factory. If you go to 14.9x24 that will increase your speed quite a bit.

What could possibly go wrong? Here, hold my beer and watch this!
Speaking from experience with "not always the best ideas" I would reconsider your thinking on this one. But if you want to still go for it make sure you have good insurance for yourself and people you want to haul and share the experience with. Or not? Regards, John.

if he has a hi crop it does in fact have 36 inch rears. basically a Farmall AV I understand why he wants to fo faster. theres always a fast and a slow group with Farmalls sailing past everyone
I would just get a Farmall H or M with some tall tires on it
