tach drive adjustment on a 400

My tach stopped working and I removed the drive housing from under the distributor to look at the gear. It was not worn or damaged. When I pulled on the end of the cable, about 9" pulled out. So the problem is a broken cable. Between the casting and the drive were three shims. How does a person determine the correct amount of shims that need to be used?

None of the gear housings used shims, just a gasket. If you have the type with notches around it, the shaft bore is off center in the housing and you turn to adjust gear mesh. If you have the updated later than a 400 that doesn't have notches no adjustment was supposed to be needed.

My housing has a ring with notches on it. When the tach was working, it seemed to have a needle that was a little bit erratic. Which is why I thought it might not be adjusted correctly. I will loosen it and then turn it lightly to the right until it stops and then back it off a touch. I hope that this sounds right.

Updated replacement type top in picture has a keeper to prevent forward movement. When adjusting the other type don't push in on gear shaft when adjusting. IIRC back off two notches after gear mesh has zero play.

The erratic needle movement may have been the cable catching inside the "tube". If I had given it some thought before it broke, maybe I would not need to buy a new one.
