working on the charging system on the 460.

just had the generator rebuilt and its charging on the shop stand.

put on a new regulator and polarized it.

put on new 1ga battery cables and cleaned the point where the neg grounds to.

charged the battery over night; its hot.

now, with the tractor running I'm getting 12.66v. this should be in the 14v range right?

what am I missing?

My BEST guesses would be that there's a wiring issue, or the new VR is not working.

Jumper the "F" terminal on the generator direct to chassis ground and see if it charges. (This bypasses the wire to the VR and the voltage and current regulating parts in the VR.)

(NOTE: This "full-fields" the generator, do this only for a short time as a test, don't run it for a long time with the jumper in place.)

Is your VR grounded well?
Hook up a jumper wire from a good "ground"
to the VR mounting tab that has the grounding
wire on it.

Did you get the regulator from the shop that rebuilt the generator? Either way, the shop should be able to hook them up on their stand, see that they are working properly together, and adjust if needed. If they are not working together you know its between those two parts and should be able to take care of that at the shop. If they are working correctly together you know its your wiring. Yes, you can check it with them on your tractor. This is just another way to get to the end of the puzzle.

Indeed if the charging system is working at fast RPM battery voltage should rise to at least 13 and 14 subject to RPM and battery condition.

FIRST insure BOTH the genny and VR have good grounds then work through my Charging Troubleshooting Procedure to find the problem.
