Removing a broken injector pump shaft on a 656

My brothers 656 is sitting forlornly in a back field because of an injector pump that failed. The pump shaft is snapped off about 4 inches from the timing gear in the motor. The task is to get the broken shaft out of the gear and replace the pump. Supposedly , you can loosen the nut on the end of the shaft and drive it backward with a drift and it should pop loose. Tried heat , penetrating oil and increasing violence but no joy. There really isn't a good angle to get to the end of the broken shaft.

Told bro to put down the tools and let me see if any of the people on this site have had any experience with that problem. Looks to me like he'll have to take off the front of the engine to be able to take the gear out and put it in a press, but it doesn't seem like it should be that drastic a fix. Any thoughts?
 
Seems to me there are 4 capscrews holding the gear to the tapered hub that fits the shaft (for timing purposes).

Is it possible to remove 2 of them and attach a puller with a slotted cross bar to force the tapered shaft out of the hub???
 
Could be the tapered shaft has also sheared the key. Just get
a bigger hammer and drive out the old shaft. I'd also have the
pump hydraulic head pressed apart to find WHY pump seized.
If the cause is not found it MIGHT happen again.
 
had one do that on a 2640deere i had had that pump off about 20 years back i end up taking off the front cover and putting the gear in a press to get the broken shaft out it had sheared the key and wedged it into the gear of course to do the front cover the front end fuel tank radiator hyd pump turned in to a lot more job then it should of been
 
Dieseltech, you were correct. The key had sheared and it took a bigger hammer and drift to punch it out. Now we have to be sure when we put the new pump in that we have the timing marks lined up. That timing issue has proven to be more difficult than we thought it would be, but at least we have the old shaft out.
