tractor vet, rusted red, jhncp : thanks for the reply's and help to confirm some items on the to do list. I did not have the injection pump off so the timing was still set on the tractor when I got it. I only held the glow pulls on for 15 seconds I did not know you could hold them longer from the way it sounds. the main bearing are new and was set with plastic gage, the cam I did not touch and the oil pump was rebuilt and I followed the instruction as I had to remount the drive gear on the shaft. the head was totally redone by a shop that done this stuff for years around here so everything in the head is new. for the motor sleeves the went in easy as this is a slip fit sleeve motor and I have re-shimmed them and have the step with in .002 on the block on all 6 cylinders. the starter is the one that came with the tractor and I guessing it not 100 percent but the it has 2 new 6 volt batteries like it should and new 1 gage wire for the battery system. I was unsure on the IPTO but I figured it needed rebuilt and you guys confirmed that so will plan on doing that this early summer and changing the hyd fluid would be a good thing as I know what I have then. I have ran the tractor for a total of 40 mins and made sure it was up to temp, I checked for leaks as it has new water pump all hose are new for water jacket to radiator and line going to hyd cooler. still more to do and thanks for the replies.

It may not be good to hold glow plugs longer than needed or they might start to burn out and then you'll have more problems starting.

If you haven't replaced the glow plugs look into using
7.3 Powerstroke glow plugs. Night and day difference in starting.

That might be a brilliant idea I never heard of. I have a 706 282d that has just been sitting in shed for several years, but when I used it I usually would have to give it a sniff of ether to start but I don't like using ether.

"I did not have the injection pump off so the timing was still set on the tractor when I got it". that's why I suggested to check the timing, you have no way of knowing it is set to 5 degrees BTDC . as for 706 exact timing I am presuming this. the 660 is set to 5 degree's. you do not know where the timing is set now as it may have been played with. the head will need retorquing when you have run it at operating temp for an hr. or so. plus a valve reset.sleeve stand out spec. is .032-0044. and yes you need to hold glow plugs longer according to temperature. plus once running till white smoke clears.
