Farmall 400 PTO?

A neighbor has a 400 IH and says his PTO is slipping. The PTO runs and stops...however he says it slips when trying to mow tall grass.

It looks like a 460/560 PTO and I may have an IT manual for one of those if it needs overhauled.

My question is there any clutch adjustment external on these?

I had serviced the transmission and the PTO oil last year and the PTO oil was clean that I drained out

Thanx Rag

The 400 has a planetary pto that is easily adjustable from the outside, right on top under the
little cover. Some times the drive band is so worn it will not hold and you can pull the back off
pto and switch the two bands as the brake band seldom wears unless totally missadjusted.

Follow the book procedure if you have a book. Other wise, align the lock half way between on and
off. Tighten both bands down snug. Back them each off 1 1/2 turns . Now, with a short punch, 5
or 6 inch, you should be able to turn the shaft with some effort with latch half way between.

Due to worn linkages some may require some additional adjusting but can't tell that from here.

Yeh I found my 460/560 IT destruction manual...read up on it a bit. I see the band screw cover and bet/hope that a band adjust will get it working.

Thanx for the info....didn't really know what was inside that pto box...and wasn't sure it's compatible with 460/560 procedures or not....seems early 60 series is the same as the 400 and later 60 series PTO is an entirely different animal

Exactly. Be sure there is no slop in the linkage, and if there is, repair the slop to assure solid engagement, and braking adjustment. Jim
