Where can I find out what the letters in serial # mean. Some of the Farmall's has #'s after serial #. Thanks for your help.

Best place is a suffix listing page in the IH parts manuals for the tractor. S means equipped with a T/A and provision for a independent PTO.

If you're looking for one authoritative online resource for the information, there is none.

If your next reaction is to say, "Somebody should..." please volunteer to do so. I'm sure everyone here will be glad to help you fill in the blanks.

As another poster said, the codes for a given model are on the "Suffix Letter Code" page in the printed parts manual for that specific tractor.

When the paper manuals got scanned into the on-line consumer parts system that page was not always included in the electronic version.

Enter your model number and it will be "hit or miss" if the page shows up in the index listing.

I randomly chose "560 diesel" and you can go to the link below and see the "Suffix Letter Code" page for the "450 Diesel", as an example.

There's a book, hard-cover, 8 1/2 x 11, I have two copies, that tell you what every number and letter mean. I cannot find mine right now. But it tells you that FBH means an H Farmall, tells you what number corresponds to what year, and the suffix, for example X-1 means gasoline high compression engine. The book is usually listed in Ebay, and it can be expensive. Our local library had one in the Discard pile for 50 cents, and I grabbed it several years ago.
