SMTA Sealed Beams

Org bulb for a S/MTA IS NOT a 4411 the ORG bulb has been obsolete for many years . Now places like Stinners has a Knock off they are peddling and you pay out the Donkey for it and a little news flash they look good on the show grounds , BUT don't except them to work for vary long . More China Knock off Junk . They were the early version of the sealed beam that was replaced buy the 4411 and what ever the number was for the 6 volt version ( never can keep that number in my pea brain. ) So if you want lights to work on your S/MTA's then your going to have to forget about what they came with from the factory and use what ever will work and stay working . Plum hate being out in the field late at night and into early morning hours three miles from your pick up on a night you can not see your hand inft. of your face enjoying a nice spring evening early morning plowing and all of a sudden everything goes BLACK and no flash light not even a lighter or a match on ya. BTDT.

If you can get the "correct" style sealed beams for $20 each, buy a dozen. That's CHEAP.

I haven't looked in a couple years but last time they were something north of $40 each.

I've squeezed 4411/4511 style bulbs in and made it look good but it's TIGHT and you need to grind the back of the bulb to make it fit. Glass is kind of tough to grind. You don't want to let it get too hot.

Google to find a Wagner catalog. Then look on Amazon.

Bought some for the 460 that way. A little bigger size than SM but same process.

You guys just aren't getting it. The sealed beam bulbs in the factory light buckets on a Super MTA are UNIQUE to the 53-58 IH and Farmall tractors.

They are NOT standard bulbs. You're not going to find them in a Wagner catalog.

The only place you are going to find them is a place that specializes in reproduction tractor parts for old tractors.

At one time there was a conversion kit that looked like the sealed beam, but had a replaceable 1156/1157 style bulb inside. However, they apparently did not sell well and the place that made them did not make any more. There was a vendor at Red Power last year that still had a few.

If you CAREFULLY pry apart an original bulb, you will see the whole "sealed beam" is a sham. Inside the bulb is a standard 1156/1157 style bulb, permanently mounted. Figure out how to replace that, glue the glass back on, and Bob's your uncle.

My local ACE Hardware store had 4411's for $5-$6, and Blain's Farm & Fleet had them for $6. Then a guy in maintenance at work gave me three of them. They used them in the Emergency Exit lights that come on when the power failed. They get tested every month just in case the power went out every year or two.
I don't really care WHAT Farmall put in the lights of my Super H over 65 years ago. If the #4411 fits and works when I turn the light switch knob I'm good with it! The '51 M still has the teardrop lights, uses a bulb.

I have always used a 4411 bulb . Grind off most of the protruding tab and about four or five wraps of electric tape for a gasket and they will work fine.

I had the flat back lights on my Super C all blasted and painted and then found out the sealed beams were 40 bucks a piece and that was probably over 25 years ago. I put a set of the old tear drops on.
