Gasket Sealant Use or Don't Use

I finally got the head and pistons back from the machine shop so my daughter and I can get back to work on her AG project. While we were doing research on head gaskets, some people use a gasket sealant and some do not. I have even heard from a life long mechanic where he would lightly spray paint it and install it while it is still wet.

I want to know from the experts on whether we should use a gasket sealant on the head gasket or not.

Some of the head gaskets for the 113/123 engines require sealant and are labeled as such. On some of them, it will be stamped right on the gasket. I thought I had one here that I could take a picture of, but I guess I used the last one that I had.

The head gaskets that are sold on this site have Sealant/Retorque Required stamped right on them. I found a couple of photos, it's right beside where it says UP. I have seen them in either place on new gaskets.

Coppercoat, I am sure there are some imperfections on the block surface, do it once and be done. Haven't put a head gasket on without some sealant to be safe.

Couple guys from the RPM forum use aluminum paint. I'd be curious what Pete23 has to say. Head gaskets
have changed in the last 50 years.

I didn?t spray my C113 with copper coat 🧥 had a small leak between 2 and 3 , not much After ,retorque got it .
It was a mahrle head gasket , I called them , about coating they would not recommend anything cause they did not make it.
Sad

Copper coat is made for head gaskets. For a few bucks a can
why would anyone not use it. I don?t understand what it could
hurt. Someone please correct my way of thinking.

the thing is when the head and block surfaces are resurfaced you should not need anything. also the sealant is built right into the gasket in a lot of them. you cant just say to use a spray as there is different circumstances. I have never used copper coat. I only use felpro high tack sealer on all my gaskets including the head gasket. the 282 engine is the test of that. I am sure when engines are assembled in the factory or assembly line they don't spray gaskets.

Some head gaskets say not to because it
already has something on it and adding
another may screw it up. Some head gaskets
have all metal on one or both sides, I would
give it a copper spray on the all metal.

Lee is correct; if this is an in frame overhaul, the block gasket surface is just cleaned up. Where the -
head gasket surface- should have been planed. So you will have some uneven surfaces. Use copper coat
spray, spray both sides of the head gasket. Torque to specs. Get running, hot engine and retorque, set
valves, good to go........

Old time method: abundant coat of Gun Grease on both sides and torque in steps - 70 fp, 80 fp, etc in a spiral from center out until you reach desired torque. Grease allows gasket to adjust to conditions.
