ooh boy. I don't think those old tractor care one bit. oil now is such an improvement since they were built. but if its a diesel tractor better make sure its a diesel oil.

I use Tractor Supply "All Fleet" 15W-40 diesel oil in all my old (40's, 50's and 60's) Farmall, Minne-Mo and Oliver gas tractors. Also in my 70's Kenworth (Cummins) and 90's Ford (Navistar) diesel trucks.

No oil issues whatsoever with any of them.

I use the O'Reilly's brand 20W-50 in almost every thing I own and have for 20 plus years with no problems

15-40 Delvac, one of the best and very inexpensive after the rebate! Last time it was on sale it was cheaper in gallons than a 5 gallon pail. Just don't put it a vehicle with a catalytic converter.

Ya'll use what ya want for a gas tractor i run NOTHING but Case I H low ash 30 weight, i get tired of doing valve jobs . On diesels it is the #1 diesel oil in 30 weight . Remember i have seen the insides of engines more then the rest of you all combined . That is why my 806 is pushing over 10000 hours Eugene's 1066 is over 6000 hours John boy's 966 is at 5500 hours and his 806 went 14000 hours before rebuild . you can save a buck and end up spending 4 or 5 grand in the long run. The oil Case I H sells is one of the top oils out there bar none . Now as for my dodge Cummins it gets the Case I h 15-40 . She is 25 years old now and still doing her thing with only valve adjustments.

This is one of those questions that can cause the most arguments on any forum for anything related to engines be it lawnmowers, motorcycles or large earth-moving equipment! Would not surprise me to hear of arguments on a forum for fishing reels!

My opinion, which is worth just what you are paying for it, unless you are running the engine hard for say 2,000 hours a year any name brand oil should be fine. If just running a few hours a month doing light work like pulling a wagon giving hayrides in the fall I find it hard to believe even the Farm and Family brand of oil would not be just fine.

Keeping the oil changed, say once a year for the seldom used engines or what ever the engine manufacture suggests for a engine that is actually worked is more important, same for filters!

Now if you are working the engine hard and long hours having oil samples taken and tracked would be as important as just dumping in fresh oil every 1,000 hours or what ever is recommended for the particular engine. That will give you a means of knowing what is happening in the engine before it causes problems.

Most oil companies offer that service or should be able to point you to a lab that does it. For lack of any other ideas I know that service is readily available through any Cat dealer.

When I reassembled [ honed, new rings, rod bearings, on our Farmall BN 46 I put in synthetic 10-30 just over 100 hours ago Starts first time over; even by hand; in our winters here in south west Ontario Canada. When I change it shortly I will install the same. Hasn't used much, only down a fraction of a pint. Oil pressure is running, even yesterday, at 65 to 75% whether cold or hot full throttle or idle and has been since first I started the engine 100 hours ago.
So as the rest have said or implied use good oil.

What Vet said, and he oughtta know. Both mine got IH 30 wt twice a year. Last spring, I switched to Kendall 15-40 since it was available locally, roughly the same price, and seems to perform just as well. The 300 holds about 50 pounds cold and 40 hot with both, and the Cub stays well above the red on the oem gauge. Neither tractor uses oil that I can tell, and the oil is fairly clean when its drained. Doesn't look or smell burned. My tractors get used pretty hard throughout the year, so getting a good oil and filter is important to me. I also suggest buying a good filter. Your oil can only do so much, and if the filter can't keep it clean, it'll do even less. My opinion, for what it's worth.

What no one here old enough to include silver hair!

I originally used straight 30 in my 806 gas. The tractor smoked a little and sometimes had to add oil. I switched to 10w40. No more smoke . No more adding oil between changes. Similar experience with my Craftsman push mower. I don?t think much of straight 30 now.
