B414 oil in coolant?

Hi all,

lookin for some advice.

B414 deisel (BD154) engine.

it appears that i am getting oil in the coolant.

with engine running and rad cap off, coolant is foaming and is a darkish color and feels a little slippery. i thought it would be kinda milky if oil was in the coolant.
Tonight i will drain the pan and check the oil, also going to do a compression test to see what it reveals.

i have read as many posts as i could on this site, and some say that a head gasket is probably not the problem.

if this is not the prob, where is the most likely source of this trouble?

One another note, under heavy load, i get a bit of knocking.
Just wondering if i can narrow it down to either the rod bearings or crank bearings.

thanks in advance

mike

More than likely the oil cooler has went to leaking. The easiet way to tell is pull it off and blck/plur some of the openings put in water and heat while putting about 40 psi on the oil side of the cooler. IT will bubble the water when it gets hot enough to leak near operating temp.

thanks for the reply.

i didnt know this tractor had an oil cooler.

any chance you could tell me where its located

cheers mike

B414D with BD154 engine does not have an oil cooler.
I would suspect it is the head gasket letting the oil that goes to the tappets leak into the coolant but when engine is turned off then the coolant should leak into the oil, that is if the rad cap pressure
of about 10 psi is still working. Look at the oil filler cap on top of the valve cover and see if there is any slimy sludge on in it.

Or is it combustion gases plus unburnt Diesel that is leaking via a bad head gasket into one of the coolant passages in the head. Does the oil level go up or down?

Very easy to change head gasket on that BD154 engine.

I have the BC144, BD144A and BD154 Engine Service Manual in PDF format that if you use the email function of this site and send me an email, I will email a copy to you.

thanks for the reply Jim.

i just checked the oil level, its definetly dropped since this started.

i appreciate the manual offer too.

when i figure out how to use the email function i will take you up on the offer.

thanks again

cheers

I second what Jim said as I have worked on a lot of these engines. The oil to the rockers leaks across the top of the block and it then goes down the water passages.Remove the cyl head and clean the head and the top of the block then refit with a new gasket. Torque the head bolts down to 80lb/ft and set all valves to 20th and you will be good to go. MJ

thanks for the replies gents.

just thought i would give an update.

the head gasket has started to de-laminate.
there are places where the material that is sandwiched between the two metal gasket surfaces is actually missing.

i am waiting for a new head gasket, should be here any day.

i will post some pics of the gasket when i get a chance.

cheers

Hi all,

Update,

BD154 all back together, no more oil in coolant.
engine seems to be running better than it ever has.
i was experiencing some smoking issues before head gasket change, that has stopped also.

Its great to have the ole girl running again.
I am putting the snowblower back on the frontend loader tomorrow and move some serious snow!

Next project is to change the glow plugs to pencil style and wire them up in parallel. I will start a new thread if I have any questions

thanks again

cheers mike
