Good Friends

I was converting my Super MTA over to electronic ignition, 12 volt negative ground and alternator. I did the mechanical stuff but didn't know how to approach
the electrical conversion. I mentioned this to a friend after church a couple of weeks ago and he said let me take a look at it. He was an electrician but
had never worked on old tractors. He stopped by today and in three hours the tractor was converted, up and running and charging, lights burning. What a friend, I owe him big
time. Ellis

I converted my SMTA over to 12 volt just after I got it. I used it as baler tractor and wanted lights on equipment and 12 v so much easier to find. I also had been around a number of Ms that turned over verey slow and you wondered if they were going to start at all. I used a wiring diagram on here by Bob M but there are others also. My Pertronix IE came later but have always been glad I converted it. I think it has been at least 10 years with no issues and you don't have to mess with points or maybe get a bad condensor.

I was just curious because a lot of people have problems with the petronix. I know they can be very finicky and can't handle much current, so you have to make sure you are using the proper resistor or coil with proper 3 ohm resistance for 12V .
I always make up my own electronic ignition using dodge reluctor wheel and pickup with a GM HEI module. Works great, is cheap and can use a low ohm coil for more voltage, allowing me to open the spark plug gap up quite a bit. I've got a 4 tractors set up this way, and it's been working great for 10 years for me, no failures yet.
