Super A fan hub

My super a has an o ring on the fan hub spindle shaft that the parts manual doesn't list. It broke and the oil is leaking out. Is it supposed to have one, or is this something someone added in the past? I'm pointing to it in the picture with a screwdriver. Also to help me understand the fan hub design, does the spindle shaft have a reverse thread cut into it to keep the oil pushed away from the rear bushing area to help prevent oil leakage? The parts manual I have doesn't show any seals in it.

I believe the fan hub on the Super A works similarly to the Cub. There is a fill plug which you turn horizontal, fill with oil until it runs out, then turn the hole downward and let the excess run out.

The secret is that there's a standpipe inside the hub, behind the plug which doesn't let all the oil run back out. It retains just enough to keep the hub lubricated.

My suspicion is that the hub is simply overfull, and someone went to a lot of work to plug the leak that they caused themselves.

Some body put that there to stop the leak which means it is worn and best thing is to get a new fan which has sealed bearings. You can get them for around 75.

That's not factory equipment but I've got an O-ring just like it on my Super C. It might slow the oil loss a little.

Very interesting about the filling procedure. I knew about adding oil to the plug in the horizontal position, but must have missed the part about turning it down to allow the excess to run out. It makes sense, because I oiled the hub on my A several years ago and it pushed out the excess on its own out the back, but I just assumed it had a leak also because the hub has a lot of lateral thrust along its shaft, but not wobble. I haven?t replaced it yet because it doesn?t seem to be getting any worse and I only use it about 5 hrs a year. The hub on the SA doesn?t have this thrust or any kind of wobble. I will try draining off the excess and monitor for wear or noise. This tractor only gets about 5 hrs a year also.

At some point in production, the O-rings were used during shipping or storage, or possibly for protection during factory painting.

As you have found, the parts catalog doesn't list them, and Terry gave you the straight info on filling them with the proper amount of oil.
