1940 Farmall H PTO inquiry

I am in the process of restoring my 1940 Farmall H Serial FBH-21044 and have finally tracked down the original Small diameter, Slotted PTO assembly for this tractor. I also have the later style splined PTO assembly that I would like to use instead. Can anyone tell me if the existing counter shaft in this tractor is usable by simply removing the "adapter" #59372DX? While I am able and actually have a used counter shaft that I believe will work with the later style PTO, I am really not excited about tearing the entire transmission down to swap out counter shafts if I don't have to. On a related note, how is the slotted counter shaft adapter connected to the counter shaft? If you have pictures to offer, please send them my way. [email protected]. I also have photos of both PTO assemblies and the counter shaft that I can install if I need to.

I think there is/was an adapter that fit over the small shaft making it a standard size. that would be ideal. Jim

My 1940 H has the original, small diameter PTO. The adapter to make it standard size was already on when I bought it. Those adapters are still available.

Serial 45614 and up for spline counter shaft if it has the standard low gear. Unless changed in the past.

You will need to look at the end of the counter shaft to see if it splined or not. That adapter is
so you could use the original style pto rear unit with a replacement splined counter shaft. I am
guessing that IH quit making the counter shaft with those two large driving dogs and then had to
come up with a way so original pto could still be used with new splined counter shaft.

I'm thinking that those two driving dogs on the driving end of the pto is what you are referring
to as slotted and not the output splines. If your shaft is splined you should be able to use the
latest SAE required pto.

We have one of them early "H" and the PTO doesn't work. I can engage it and it turns but put a mower on and it would not power it. Looks like a big job to get into the rear end. Is the fix
difficult once the platform is off??

First pull pto to determine what style pto you have. If real early you will have two pulling dogs on the end and they will no doubt be worn. Go from there to decide repairs.

Pulling cover is the easy part if you need to replace lower shaft. Have to know what you have to decide on repair.

If just a regular H the 40 models into Oct. used the notch drive counter shaft from factory. H serial numbers 45614 and higher used the spline type counter shaft for the last type PTO used on a H. If changing counter shaft the top shaft and counter shaft needs to be removed along with the PTO and top cover. Also if tractor is not split you need to go up from bottom into center housing to remove parts. No need to get detailed unless you decide to do it, if so someone can point out the details. If the tractor happens to be above the serial number just take PTO out and slide a later type in. Just make sure the counter shaft bushing for pto shaft pilot is okay. Check spline condition if you happen to have that shaft, splines on some counter shafts also get worn enough to cause PTO to disconnect.

It seems based on the above comments that I will, in deed, need to get into the transmission to change out counter shafts to use the newer style PTO as the alternative is to stay with the smaller diameter "drive dog" PTO.. That will also afford me the ability to inspect the condition of all of the drive gears as well.. The next decision I have to make is whether or not I want to attempt that without splitting the tractor.

My first thought is how are you RESTORING your H without completely removing all gears , engine
parts etc. Maybe your idea of restoring should be reconsidered!!

I have already completed an engine overhaul with new cam shaft, sleeves, pistons, bearings, entire valve train and shaved the head.
