Putting a new clutch in 966. Ordered parts from CNH. Questioned parts man about difference in clutch plate. The one I received is 4button, the one I took out is 6button. Looked up parts myself on the case site and can find no other plate listed. NOW WHAT...

It's probably just fine.

For an alternate part, is the dealer or another business nearby a Hy-Capacity dealer?

Having said that, I looked and this very site, our gracious hosts, have clutch parts available for your 966. Check it out!

Use it. no worries. Just a different 'style'. However, there are cheaper places to buy parts than CIh.

Four pad is original. Every body wants to improve on original. I personally like the four pad as it can be tuned for better release and if operated like it should be it lasts just fine.

I agree with Pete the four pad will be fine . I use to be a Hy Cap dealer and it was what ever the customer wanted , i could get you the 4 pad or a six pad or even and eight pad disc , If you wanted a heavier pressure plate i could do that also . If the tractor in question was say only used for chore work then the stock clutch was fine , if that was the main tractor and did all the tillage then i might tell them to step up a bit , if the tractor had the wick turned up then here again i would recommend a heavier clutch set up.

To get the 6-button clutch, you order a 1066 clutch.

Back in the day it was a common upgrade. The old school career parts guys would recommend it if the pump was turned up or you did a lot of heavy pulling. The young guys working behind the parts counter for minimum wage now weren't even born when these tractors were front line machines so they'd have no idea how to cross reference or to recommend the heavier clutch.

A 6 pad clutch from a 1066 will not fit in a 966 unless you also replace the flywheel. 9's had a 12 inch clutch and 10's had a 14 inch clutch. Now the 986 had a 6 pad clutch from the factory, I always liked the HD clutches from Hy-Capacity as the pads were larger and covered the full face of the PPA and flywheel.

Ya can install and 8 pad 12 inch disc if ya want . when i took the center out of the 806 clutch several years back while pulling silage wagons on my 806 i installed a heavy six in it and a EXTRA heavy PPa. Ya just need to know what numbers to order and a phone call to get a extra heavy PPa. . Yes the 12 inch clutch in the 966 is a bit whimmpy but you can spice it up .
