Farmall Super A belly mower

I see belly mowers for sale now and then and most are listed for Cubs. What model mower would have been used on an A or super A? L59 Woods listed for a Cub the same as one for a super A? Thanks

iirc The L is for left discharge and was for A s. The 59 is right discharge and for the cub.

I ve been told you can twist the belt on an L59 but you would need to get blades for a 59 for it to cut

The PTO on a Cub rotates opposite from an A so you would have to have a way to change the rotation of the mower.

the rotation of the blades starts with how the belt is placed on which side of the center spindle that determines which way the blades will turn. the twists will be the same on both rotations. The decks are either right or left throw

I'm in no way an expert but have had a L306 on a Farmall BN for a few decades.

One thing I would say about trying to reverse the direction of of the mower deck is the bolt that hold the blades on the L306 are left hand threaded. If on was to reverse the way the blades ran you could have a problem keeping the bolts tight.

So if deck is designed for right hand rotation do what you need with the belt to keep it rotating that way!

Just my opinion and it's worth just what it cost you!

I have a Woods L59 mower on my Super A and love it. The way and the material it will cut, you would think it is a brush hog. The only problem I ever have is keeping the belt tighter than you would think it should be. If you ever have to replace the belt it has, I believe 2 turns in it and if you don't get them in the correct location it won't work. Great set up for me.

I respectfully differ that the blades don t matter. There is generally only one cutting edge on a mower blade. By reversing the direction you are using the blunt side of the blade.

I believe what John M was saying is if you install the belt the right way you can get the deck to spin the correct direction to have them cut as designed! NOT that you could spin the blades the opposite direction and still cut!

And Like I said I don't think you can run blades opposite to the direction the deck was made to turn. If you try that I would think you would find the bolts on the spindle that hold the blades to loosen up in hard cutting.

And I appreciate Woods put L. H. On the bolt heads to remind me they are reverse thread. Saves a lot of cussing

They made a L59A-3 and a 59A-2 both were for the superA-140 series tractors

If you google search "woods undermount mowers for vintage tractors" (without the quotes) you'll find a link for a pdf catalog of Wood's mowers that will fit an A or Super A. I was concerned that my A might struggle with a 72" L306, but it has been no problem.

Well as the "A" and my "BN" are powered by basically the same motor I'm not surprised that it handles the L306. Now if you are letting the grass get around a foot tall and it's nice and thick that would be another story!
