I know the post is old but maybe this will help someone like me, I
have a 1963 706 gas with the 263 engine. My tractor was a jewel of a
barn find with only 1642 original hours on it, this one began to cut out
intermittently and stumble, sometimes rough idle, sometimes black
smoke, about 25 hours ago, I replaced the fuel line, sediment bowl,
added an in-line filter, rebuilt the carb, and had the fuel tank cleaned
and lined, so I know my fuel system is top notch, I run ethanol free 93
octane in it also. My timing is set at 18 degrees advance at 2300
rpm, (my tractor still pinged a little at 20). I checked my ignition
system first and was glad I did, my condenser inside the distributor
was grounded out internally, causing my points to ground out
intermittently as well. Changed the condenser and BAM! Back to
business.

My friend bought a new 1969 ford pickup, so we took it on a 300 mile one way trip, we got about 2/3 the way there, it acted like it was running out of fuel, but we drove it a ways yet, anyway we pulled into a service station,he talked the mechanic on duty, a young guy, fresh out of trade school,he said let me put the scope on it of some test equipment,he said it's a bad condenser, he changed it, that was it!

Well lets tell you this , your C 263 timing should be 23 Degree BTDC not 18 at rated RPM or wide open , NO you do not use and inline filter on the fuel , you use the sediment bowl with the Screen as anything that can get thru the screen will pass thru any port in the carb and does not restrict fuel flow .

Plowboy, Welcome to YT! Forgive me if you know this, but hopefully you are aware that there is an small strainer screen behind the fitting where the fuel line attaches to the carb. This can plug. I believe those carbs had drain plugs in the bowls you need to pull that out and make sure it can flow a pint of fuel in 3 minutes. Prove that in fact that the fuel system is in tip top shape. Even though your tank is clean as a whistle you never know when a piece of unknown foreign material can get in the tank and float over and plug the top of the sediment bowl. Also some inline filters may restrict flow on a gravity only system.

(quoted from post at 18:07:29 01/06/20) Vet, my 656 manual for a 263 also specifies 18 deg. btdc. Why do you say 23 deg.?

Thanks for your response.

Timing for a 656 and 706 are different.

The 656 rated RPM is 1800 while the 706 is 2300 for the same time period. During production of the 56 series it appears the rated RPM on the 656 was increased to 2300 as well, and I suspect the timing advance was also increased to 23 degrees at the same time.
