SMTA Fan Belt

Tighten the water pump pulley just like on an H, SH or M, SM. As you tighten the front half of the pulley scheve, it squeezes the belt & forces it up & tightens it. jal-SD

That big belt should be loose. Pushing on the middle of it with your thumb as hard as you can should push it an inch inwards , maybe an inch and a quarter. You need to be much farther into this tractor to get the fan pulley tighter if needed. Please wait for the owners and repair manuals you have ordered. It is easy to break this pulley, and you do not want to do that. My rule is to fix one thing at a time. "fixing" may turn it into a series of unknown complex failures. I give this information based on my extensive experience. It has waited all these years, get it moving and then go forward. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but it is not best practices. With respect, and encouragement, Jim

TY Jim for your words, I will heed them... I was moving to fast as you said... I will wait for the books...TY again..The tractor seemed to move much better today after it dried out, my TA may not be working but it appears the clutch is.

Hard to do, but if you can get a small amount of
penetrating oil on the threaded portion of the
pulley without getting it on the belt, it might
make the adjustment process easier when that is
needed.
The threaded part of those pulleys tend to get
rusty & tight.

Like Jim said one thing at a time. Though if you look for a screw/bolt in the front have of the water pump pulley loosen the nut then the screw out about 1-2 turns with your hand turn the water pump holding the front half till you achieve the tension for it. Squirting some oil in there and backing the half off till you can turn things easily would be best then adjust your belt. Tighten the screw into the nearest notch then tighten jam nut none of this needs to be extremely tight. I usually back it off to the last notch if it gets tight before the next one. Will still cool on the hottest of days when working.

The pulley works similar to a snowmobile clutch, except it's manual.

If you look at the water pump pulley in between the fan and the pulley you will see that it is threaded and has notches every 90 degrees. This is what everyone has been talking about right along.

The front half of the pulley turns on these threads and moves forward and backward. As it moves back it pinches the belt, pushes it out, and tightens it.

In preparation for eventual adjustment or belt replacement, clean out those threads with a wire brush, as they can get clogged with rust, grease, paint, etc.. Dribble some penetrating oil in the threads so it can soak into the pulley.

When you go to turn the pulley you may need to drive it around with a punch initially to get it broken loose. Ideally use a brass or aluminum drift if you have one, be careful with a steel punch as the parts are cast and you can crack them. Don't forget the set screw.
