seal installation

The yoke on a Farmall M tractor that holds the bolster shaft. Has anyone successfully installed the upper bolster seal inside the yoke? I have tried 3 times on two different tractors and can't get the job done. Apparently someone else couldn't either because I found two down inside when I tried to replace mine. Elllis

It took me three turns to install the upper grease chamber seal in the steering of my H. First squashed it, second bent it, third hold the tongue just right n jaw, and nailed it. I had to invent my own seal puller, made of several sockets, a dowel rod, washers, more sockets, some duct tape, all-thread and several nuts, and I slowly p-u-l-l-e-d the seal in. I saved the puller, Just in case I have to re-do it. I feel your pain.

One of the first jobs I had when I started working at the IH Dealer was to install that seal in a M. Former mechanic had boogered the seal. Well, we didn't have a decent tool to do it with and I don't remember how I did it that time.

But I had a driver made from then on. Flange maybe half inch thick just a few thousands of inch smaller diameter than the seal with rest of driver just fit nicely into bushing a couple inches for stability. Much the same as cam bushing drivers. Threaded hole in middle to use ready rod to pull seal in place from above.

Later I had my brother make a tool for the H sized tractors but just a longer tool (maybe 8 inches or so ) and inserted from bottom and tapped seal in with hammer from below.

This is why i spent the big bucks years ago for the OTC seal driver kit as it has a sires of disc,s that you can stack together to make puller drivers up with . Makes installing seals and bushing SOOOOOOo much easier .

I just made a longer handle for my seal driver kit and didn't have any trouble at all putting that seal into my 450 or my M. You may want to go to Harbor Freight or the like and just buy a cheap seal driver kit. I made the longer handle for my kit out of a piece of 1" round bar stock. I turned the end down in my lathe and tapped the end for a bolt just like the original handle, but you wouldn't need to this if you didn't have a lathe, just tap a hole in the end for a bolt to pass through the disc and hold it in place.
