SMTA Hy-Tran fluid filler hole for trans???

If the tractor was driven to where it was washed, it should drive away. There is no relationship between the amount of Hytran and motion. Did it freeze between the time it was washed? did it stay in the place it is for a month or two? Will it go into gear? Does it start? Can you roll it in neutral? Filler hole is on the right side opposite of the gear shift. Jim

I found a plug under an inch of mud and it does not look like it has been opened in a century???? It has a little point on top that will not open it,,,,I tapped it with a chisel and nothing....any help???????????

I drove it from the garage to the yard and around for 5 minutes...stopped and washed it....backed up 10 feet in reverse and then would not go forward...then not reverse. It was in garage for years...took it out today and after washing it would not move. It goes into to gear and wants to move but seems like it has no power to move it. It is LP and it starts. It will roll, it is in a small depression and is hard to move. Found the hole under some mud...looks like it was not opened this century. it has a point on top but no way to open it....I used a chisel and nothing.

The transmission is stuck in 2 gears at once. To fix is pretty easy. Take the shifter out of the top of the tower it is sticking out of it. The shifter lever is removed by removing two small disk like plugs in the pivot area. One can be pulled out by drilling a hole in it and putting a metal screw in the hole and pulling on the screw. the pivot pin can then be driven out the other side with a punch. That pivot pin can be replaced with a pin cut from a grade 8 bolt shank of the same diameter. The tip of the shifter needs to be welded up and reshaped by grinding. See pic. There is a "sloppy shifter kit available at Ebay. Jim

You have me scratching my head here. First off, the filler plug on top of transmission cover is 1 1/2 inch pipe plug with a square 3/4 inch (or 1/2 inch) center to use a square tool (breaker bar) to remove. No pointy thing unless someone stuck a breather in it or something like that.

Next, tractor won't pull it's self yet you say it can be pushed, pulled or whatever. That tells me it is not locked in two gears if it will actually move. Can't be water frozen bull gears either. Now if it can't be moved by pushing, well could be either or even stuck brakes.

Other possibility is the TA ramp and roller has locked up. If that is the problem, pulling TA lever to low range would allow engine to move tractor. It sounds like, from your description, that the engine will just pull down and die and if so, something is locked up.

And of course, the fluid level in transmission and final drive, TA etc has no bearing on problem.

Hope this helps.

When trying to move it did you try putting the TA lever forward or in the direct position? After setting that long parts of the one way sprag clutch may have rusted due to condensation and will not grab to drive the tractor. Generally when this happens there is a whirring sound from the TA section. If this is the problem it should move with the TA in direct.

I do not know what is in the center of the plug....I will clean it more and see...it does not die when asked to move forward...it just does not move but an inch or so and stops...if I pump the clutch it moves some better...but weak. The brakes are not stuck. I moved it a few feet into the garage with the starter only. Ty for the fluid info... I will check more on it tomorrow. TY

I understand your need to fill the transmission, but it is not going to make it move. See my information below. If you have drained the transmission, you could do two things at the same time. Fix the trans shifter, and pour Hytran into the hole where the shifter was located. Jim

If it moved with the starter, it should move with the engine. Push on the clutch pedal with your hand. When you push the pedal should move about an inch to an inch and 1/2 then feel much harder to push. If it does not have this difference in feel, and seems to be uniform in amount of force, the clutch needs to be adjusted for free play. You will need a manual to adjust the clutch and TA at the same time. Not simple, and necessary.
You have not found the filler hole, read Pete 23's post!!!! Jim

Found filler hole...but something is odd....it looks to have a pipe plug in the center of it...with a square 1/4" X 1/4" square head on it, it is small, looks easy to twist off.. The pedal does not seem stiffer anywhere?? The tractor will move a little....you can rock it back and forth like when your stuck in the mud and you rock it out..if I push the clutch in and out. After 8 or 10 rocks it will start to move ...but if you hit the clutch..it stops and you have to do it all over again.

The plug you found is not toh filler plug. Where your right foot hits the foot plate when sitting on the tractor is where the much larger threaded plug is to be found. It will have a square hole in it that needs the dirt picked out. a square headed wrench (male if you get my drift) sticks down into the plug to get it out (lefty loosy). The clutch is out of adjustment, or possibly worn out to the point of no remaining adjustment. Do not worry about filling the transmission with Hytran fluid. That will be a task for when it has been repaired to move. You need both some mechanical advice from an IH qualified mechanic on site, or meticulous following of the repair manual. The info is not in the owners manual. Jim

If I'm not mistaken the Super MTA platform is like the 400/450/560 platform, and there is NO plug.

What there is, is a plate to the right of center on the platform that looks like a mirror image of the footprint of the shift tower on the left. Remove the three bolts holding that plate on, and pour your oil in there.

That is what I was thinking so I looked up the parts book and it showed platform like a regular M.
I still don't know if I believe the parts book but my memory won't say for certain which way to
think so went with the parts book.
