Farmall Super MTA

Am I correct in that there are 4 lubrication reservoirs and these are the correct oils??????
1. Steering Gear......Grease or 80w Gear oil
2. Crankcase..........Motor Oil
3. Transmission/TA/Hydraulics.......Hy-Tran fluid
4. PTO.....80w Gear oil

SMTA started out with 80 gear oil in all but engine, hydraulics, Independent PTO and air cleaner. IH changed recommendations a few times along the way before recommending hytran in transmission, hydraulics and independent pto. Three drain plugs on transmission and one on the PTO.

A Super MTA was just sold in Penn Yan, NY yesterday for 4,250 dollars. TA was in good condition. NFE.

Well being a S/MTA owner and working on other S/MTA's here is the break down on what mine has in , Engine uses 30 weight LOW ASH Case I H engine oil , Steering has 90-140 gear oil , transmission , rear end , hyd , and PTO have Hy Trans in them . what They USE to use when new was changed shortly after as they had problems with the 80-90 in the transmission and rear ends with the T/A's in the cold weather and the stopped making the additive for the 80-90 and went with the Hy trans i think in 55 maybe 56 . So now today the usse of 80-90, 90-140 is only needed in the steering worm and no place else. on them .

And i turned down 10 grand for mine twice now . Mine has been on the cover of fast line and it was one of two in the 94 Red Power round up video plus i am second owner.

TY....I will see if I can find it.... I am sure however some of these oil tractors have run for decades on regular old motor oil that was 5 years old...???

And where do you find that?
My Case IH dealer hasn?t carried low ash oil for probably 10 years. Neither have 2 other Case IH dealers many miles from here that I have checked.

Well i am a weeeee bit OCD on things and maybe this is why stuff runs longer . With well over 58 years of playing with Stuff AND SEEING FIRST HAND WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOES NOT WORK . Don't take long to see what is better for a give product . Yep it costs more , BUT it only cost a buck more to go first class . I have made my living fixing other peoples stuff . When it comes to lub i have seen first hand the good and the bad . I swa what happened when Quaker State had a run of bad oil back in the early 70's and the engines that got trashed just at our dealership where i was a Parts manager . We had a contract with Quaker State where they set us up with all the lube racks at each mechanic's station and the five hundred gallon tanks with pumps and the computer console in the parts Dept . I saw first hand what reg old oil will do to the valves on the newer I H gas engines , i saw what happens when ya switch oils . I see the end results of our tractors that have lived on the same oil for the last 30 years and longer . So yes i am a little OCD on lubes , I don't mind working on other peoples stuff as i am digging into there piggy bank but i do hate working on mine as now it is digging into my piggy bank. In my area there are five still working S/MTA's and the last one that we had down belonged to a good customer and friend and that was 10-12 years ago and the last time it was down was 1956 when it caught fire under the picker when his grandfather was picking corn , Vernon is a second owner of that one and has been on the same farm since 1954 . That one has lived on I H oil and up till 10 years ago it was the main tractor that did all the field work on a 150 acre farm . Just over the hill from Vernon is another S/MTA that has been on that farm since 1954 with one owner and it was rebuilt 35 years ago and up till 6 years ago was the main tractor on 165 acre farm , till the boys upgraded to a 1066 . What they all have in common is they all run the Case I H low ash and the Hy trans . Just sayen My other close friend runs a 1066 that he bought off me and i had no history on that tractor when i bought it but since we have rebuilt that tractor from one end to the other 30 years ago it has run nothing but Case I H products called for and other then a couple small problems we have had no problems .I don't call and alt going out as major problem or the replacement of light bulbs.

Well probably the reason that they don't carry it is that in your area you maybe the only one who is looking for it , here we still have a bunch of I H gassers running . till we could not get the gas we needed to run our 706's and 806's with ya got me thinkingh on just how many 706 gassers that WERE in my neighborhood and there were a bunch , there are a bunch of 460 and 560's still running but they are not as fussy on gas and do well on the 89 octane . The only other oil that is even close to the Cae I H low ash is DELO 100 that we ran in the old 2 stroke Detroits For us we can get that about fifteen miles from my house .

You ready for the corn head grease curveball?

Corn head grease is a lube that is more liquid than gun grease, and stiffer than gear lube. CaseIH part number B95920.

Plain old gear lube will leak out of most steering gears, and most people don't want to go through the effort of pulling the front end of the tractor apart to reseal and rebush so it doesn't leak. Corn head grease is a good compromise as it is stiff enough that it won't leak out.
