2504 gas timing

Could someone walk me through getting the ignition timing correct on my 2504 gas. The distributor was pulled. Thanks in advance.

Well if ya did this with out setting to TDC FIRST , then pull the valve cover and get the #1 piston to TDG and both valves on #1 closed and the timing marks at TDG then look on the cap as it should be marked #1 and get the rotor set to the #1 post and install. , the once ya get it running the set the timing to factory spec.s with a timing light for full advance at full throttle . Don't ask me what that is as off the top of my head I DON'T KNOW , i would have to go out to the truck and look it up, and that would require me to put my boots on and today that ain't ah going to happen .

i am not familiar with 2504 tractor. best way that i have found on small farmalls, is to remove # 1 spark plug and push some toilet paper or paper towel lightly, into the hole. bump the starter and when the paper comes flying out, stop and take something long and slender , slip into the spark plug hole and turn the engine with a crank, watching the little slender piece and when the end, quits moving down, number 1 piston is on top dead center.

You can see the top of the piston through the spark plug hole if you shine a light down in. All you really need is a thumb over the spark plug hole to be able to detect air whooshing past on the compression stroke. When you feel air, take your thumb out, shine the light in, and turn the engine with the fan blades until the piston stops coming up.

I'm not 100% sure but there should be a pointer on the front of the engine and a notch in the crank pulley. The C153 is a bored out version of the Super C engine, and those had a strange arrangement where the TDC mark was on the flywheel, so you had to crawl under the tractor. Many flywheels weren't even marked, so my method above is really the most convenient one you can use on this series of engines.
