starter question in wrong forum

I meant to ask my starter question here instead of tractor talk. I have three Farmall M tractors with the 12 volt conversion and electronic ignition. They kick over very fast and I have been wondering about damaging the gears because of this. Is this a really common problem, or something that happened once and everyone got concerned? A lot of people seem to be talking about it lately. Should I be concerned? How does a new starter gear solve the problem? Is it hard to change the starter gear or do I need new starters? Thanks, Ellis

If you are worried about the gears in the drive and flywheel. Just use a smaller cable to the starter. Dad got one of those new style drives in a starter. With in a week it was broke from engaging to hard. I put a smaller cable on it and problem has been solved. I think I put a 4or 6 gauge wire on in place of a 00 cable. I guess it would also depend on the battery that is in the tractor. We have an old Gp31 from my truck in it.

In the early seventies I changed my dads 41 H to 12 volt charging system. Alternator with separate regulator back then. Used a small size battery that would fit in box that wasn't high amp and Original type starter gear was still in it when retired in the eighties. Opinions differ, I like the originals better, but both types are aftermarket now.

My first 12 volt conversion was to my Super M in the early '80's.

The original 6 volt starter rolls the engine quite smartly on 12 volts - and it's still going strong nearly 40 years later(!)

When I switched my Ms to 12-volt, I had the starters checked and told the repair shop I was running them on 12 volts. Haven't had any problems!
