Farmall H Question

Hey Guys, I am posting this for my Dad. He has a Farmall H and it had been running fine and the other day he was driving it and it was fine and all of the sudden it just shut off. We were looking at it the other day and it seems to run fine when its in neutral and you idle up or down but once you put it in gear and really idle it up it will drive a little bit and then sputters and shuts off. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Check for something to be blocking gas flow to the carb. It could be the sediment bowl is dirty or there could be a piece of crap in the tank partially blocking the outlet. You can take the plug out of the carb or open the drain if it has one and see how quickly gas flows out into a container. It should come out for as long as you leave it open. If it rushes out at first and then dribbles out, you have some impeding gas flow.

Sediment bowl is good and clean, and was staying full when I was over there working on it with him, but will relay the message

On one of my H's I once had the same problem.

Turned out a chip of wood had gotten into the fuel tank, had saturated and sank to the bottom of the tank, and every once in a while it would block the fuel flow out of the tank. I haven't a clue how that chip of wood got in there.

Do some simple trouble shooting. Run it till it dies then do these things
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark that jump a 1/4 inch gap or more at the center wire of the distributor cap and at the 4 plug that jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. If you have go to #2
#2 pull he carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes and yes catch the gas to look for water/dirt etc.
33 when was the last time you checked the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water and filled with fresh oil??
Post back if you need more help

I had a superH that would do that. it had the original inline brass filter and it was dirty. Bought a new filter here and put in the new filter and cleaned the
carb runs fine now.

My H did that, turned out it was the old distributor cap electrode worn down. New cap, new rotor, cheap, and runs fine now.

had the same problem with one of my m's, finally after trying all the usual stuff, I took carb off, poured water in exhaust, it just poured out of the intake side (bottom) of manifold. determined the manifold had a hole in it between intake and exhaust sections. found a good one for 20 bucks, and now she starts, runs, and pulls like a new one. It was just losing vacuum at anything other than idle. Took me two summers to figure it out.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! He took the sediment bowl off today and there was 3 small pieces of plastic right at the inlet. No idea where they came from but removed them. Thanks for all the help

This summer my Oliver S88 would fire up but not have the power it should have had and I found a locust leave in the sediment bowl assembly slowing down the gas flow. Got it out and had power back. Funny how something so small can be such a big problem

If something blocks the fuel coming out of the tank, the sediment bowl will NOT empty, or drain. The fuel to the carb feeds off of the top of the sediment bowl.
