656 Starter

I have a 656 HYDRO and have had some problems with the starter in the past. Ive replaced the ring gear and Bendix twice since Ive owned it and recall there being a lot of confusion about the right tooth counts on both on this tractor. Pretty sure we worked that out last time as there was a long discussion about it and it has worked pretty much trouble free for at least a couple years. Lately its beginning to grind again though and not engage or engage briefly and then slip and start grinding. Its even worse since its gotten colder and harder to turn over.
I pulled the starter and the tips of the teeth on the Bendix are just very slightly dinged up. The ring gear still looks good.
Should I just replace the Bendix yet again? Is it a possibility that the solenoid is weak and not applying enough force to fully engage the teeth? It moves it all the way to the end when the starter is removed and I cant detect any binding it the way the Bendix slides back & forth. Can it even send power to spin the starter before its moved the Bendix as far as it can?

(quoted from post at 21:09:33 12/24/19) Bendix may be slipping. It has a one way lock up & it may not be locking as it should.
So just replace the Bendix again? How does it "lock up"?

Can anyone again tell me the correct part # for the starter drive? I know it has 10 teeth but all the ones I find with 10 teeth say they have 3 splines. To me it has 6 splines. 3 splines just seems like it would be really odd looking to me.
Again this is a Farmall 656 diesel hydro with the D282 engine.

according to the IH parts book there are two possible drives for the 656 diesel , you can
look them up on Messick's web site. you need to know the Delco starter number.

The one way lock that teddy mentioned is for the pinion drive gear. If you want to know how they work see the link. Hopefully you know that the starter drive pinion gear needs to be able to over run. If not the armature would over speed when the engine starts and possibly centrifugally disintegrate.
How a roller clutch works

I see what your saying now about it locking. Just wasn't thinking about that.
However I don't think that's my problem. I'm going to do some more experimentation on it but so far it appears that the starter gear on the Bendix is just not sliding far enough forward to positively engage the ring gear. I can see where it did at one time by the slight marks on the teeth but now it seems to be too tight of clearance between the two gears. Actually I recall it being pretty tight when I replaced them before but they did seem to work OK for quite a while.
The only way I can see to possibly shim it is to put a thin washer under the one bolt, slightly tipping the starter drive away from the flywheel. Dont know if that's kosher but I recall doing it to an old Wisconsin engine once and it seemed to do the trick. What do you think?
