IH skidded unit numbers

IH 574 and maybe others have a skidded unit number tag by the bellhousing flange in addition to the serial number tag. What is the purpose of the skidded unit number? The
parts book references it for some parts.

Hi, the short story is the skidded unit numbers referred to the final assembly of this tractor out of the Louisville, KY, USA factory.
Basically, if it was a Diesel engine 574, the D-239 Diesel engine was build in Neuss Germany, shipped to Doncaster, UK, were it was attached to the trans/diff/rear axles built in Doncaster and then crated up and shipped to Louisville, KY, USA were the Delco electric components would be added along with wheels and tires and possibly front axle and power steering.
If it was a gas engine everything was shipped the same as Diesel except for engine and at Louisville the USA built C-200 engine would be installed plus the other components like the Diesel model and that is where I believe the the skidded unit number is added, the original Doncaster, UK number is on the left side of trans case by hydraulic dipstick.
