Farmall H starter sticking - any cure?

Hi,

1941 H and the starter got stuck. Took out one bolt, loosened the other and the starter spun free. Tightened everything up and worked fine but got stuck again.

After the second time loosening and tightening, it's working fine now. But I wonder for how long.

Is there something to oil or grease that I am missing?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Classic symptom of a worn flywheel ring
gear.

Cure is to remove and replace with a new
one.

remove the starter and inspect the teeth. then look into the hole and look at the ringear teeth. You may need to use a flashlight. You will see if there is excessive wear.IE 'munched' teeth.

Here is a real inexpensive solution. And it is available here on this site store. The picture is the old style on top, new on the bottom. This works. Follow the
directions and all is well. no starter motor or shaft changes needed. Jim

Not always the case, but it would surprise you the way yours act how many that stick hardly do with a full charged battery, good
cables, clean connections and good starter switch.

The picture of the 2 drives. We had the new one on our H it broke all to pieces in about a week. Went back to the old one. Still in there.
The stuck starter is a known problem of the IH starters. Our H has had that problem for at least the last 50 years. Though not as often as you are. It has been more of an occasional thing.

if its not too bad often just putting the tractor in 5th gear and rocking the rear wheel will free the drive. you may even hear it click

Yep,as cat guy says,it is common on older IH tractors. I have 5 H/M/400 tractors. They all do that now and again. Some more than others. I simply carry the correct wrench in each tractor. Just loosen the starter bolts and shake the starter.Tighten the bolts and start the tractor. Takes less than a minute.

Thanks for all the advice.

What am I looking to purchase here?

That wasn't smart, I found it from the picture. It's worth putting a new starter drive.

Thanks again for all the help. This is such a great place to learn about tractors.

What I do till I get around to it or am forced into it, I shut engine off with transmission in gear. Just about when stops rotating I let the clutch out. This helps avoid starter locking if ring gear is getting bad.If all you problems are in the drive it won't do anything. It is possible it is a little bit of both. Don't forget to bring your wrench with you.

I got this tractor from a friend this summer and it's run great until the cold. Changed oil was about all I did. Then when it got harder to start I started looking at spark and found it had 3 different types of plugs (only 2 the same!) and took 2 different sized plug sockets to get all 4 off...

4 of the same new plugs yesterday and this thing runs and starts much better. Might not have to use so much starter but I did order the above mentioned part.

I'm amazed at how well it ran this summer with different plugs. I drove it home about 6 miles on the road.

Thanks to all the help.
