Have a 844 Ih with 239 motor. Has Bosch alternator and regulator. Has an idiot
light on dash to excite. Has 3 wire plug on regulator and alt. Terminals are
DF D+ and D-. Any way to isolate problem. besides replace.?

Is the voltage regulator external to alternator?

If so, jumper battery voltage to "DF" ("dynamo field") on the alternator, and it should charge like there's no tomorrow if it's OK.

(quoted from post at 19:35:10 12/20/19) Regulator external. So just ground the field. If doesn't alternator at fault.

I did NOT say to ground the field terminal. That's not going to get you anywhere.

Here is what I wrote..."jumper battery voltage to "DF" ("dynamo field") on the alternator, and it should charge like there's no tomorrow if it's OK".

Hi, does the light on the dash glow?
Many years ago I fixed a Bosch alternator on a CIH 495 with German D-179 engine.
IIRC, the alternator use a metal spring like strip that rides on the end of the rotor shaft to provide the ground for the rotor, the shaft had worn away a part of the metal strip and was no longer providing the ground to the rotor. I just had another similar strip brazed to the original then a few years later it failed again, replaced with Delco.
