IH 784 PTO Clutch, maybe?

This past summer I noticed my IH784 540 pto might be weak. I was running a 3 point disc mower thru hay and had to stop several times because the pto was slowing down as it was encountering heavier hay. The engine never bogged down, the pto rotations just slowed. My other tractor, rated at 55 hp (10 hp less than the 784) has no trouble at all running the mower thru the same hay. I also noticed the same sort of thing while it was running the square baler. Does this mean my pto clutch needs replaced? Could it be something else? Otherwise the tractor runs like a champ. I hope it is the pto clutch. $100 for new kit and you tube video show this to be a relatively easy fix.

There is no way the PTO can slow down and have the engine not slow down. So you will need the repair you have in mind. Just do it when you don't need it. jacking the rear end to 18 inches higher than the front will keep the oil in the trans. Jim

Thank you Jim, and for the jacking up tip. further web research (ie Redpower, etc) sez this problem is not uncommon for this model tractor.

Hi, I would get a hydraulic pressure gauge and check the PTO pressure at the test port via the MCV, IIRC it should be about 250 PSI.
There could be a MCV problem leaking seals on the PTO shaft.

Almost forgot the most likely problem is the PTO ON/OFF lever mechanism getting crap down behind the seat and rust and dirt in the shaft that it is not engaging the PTO spool all the way.
Clean crap from behind seat and spray PTO activating mechanism with your favorite penetrating oil.

There is also a youtube video for PTO clutch removal on those tractors.

Unless this is a lot different than the 574 models on the PTO don't you have to go through the round inspection / aux pump cover to get the PTO clutch out? If so then jacking will not do much unless you stand it on end. The spool stem for the PTO valve should pull up to engage so the dirt/ debris would only affect the disengage side of the valve. We have never had those problems with our 574or 674. But then they sleep inside when not used or expecting in climate weather if not being used right then.

If it was me doing it, I wouldn't worry about saving the old fluid. If you are replacing the PTO clutch, it would be a mistake (IMHO) NOT to change the hydraulic fluid and filter at the same time, unless the fluid is less than a couple of months old. Fresh high-quality hydraulic fluid is very important for the life of the hydraulic system and anything that runs off it. When I got my second 684 the 3-point wouldn't lift properly and it was very hard to steer. Changing the hydraulic fluid made a daylight-and-dark difference in how well those things worked, and also greatly improved the PTO function as well. Takes 9 gallons and Hy-Tran is the recommended fluid. It's pricey, but really makes a difference.
