Farmall 140 transmission noise

Long story short, just redone my grandfathers 140 which sat
for probably 20yrs. Rebuild motor, new clutch, painted,
changed all fluids, tires etc. I have a noise in the trans that
almost sounds like a bearing, almost sounds like a rod knock
if that makes sense. The noise goes away when the clutch is
pressed, going down hill etc but gets worse when under any
load or going up hill. There was some water in the trans and
some rust on gears but everything turns free and smooth by
hand. I?ve drove it around the yard several times and flushed
with kerosene twice and oil twice not much difference. PTO is
not engaged and it doesn?t get worse when it?s engaged. Any
help is appreciated!

The sound could be a chipped gear on the lower shaft (assuming you looked at all teeth on the top shaft). If no indication of chipped teeth, another issue is part 40 in the attached diagram. ait is an aluminum "oiler" gear that makes sure there is upper shaft lubrication when doing stationary tasks with the PTO or what ever, in neutral. They loose teeth and crack for no reason other than poor strength. it will make noise when ever the trans is turning. A chipped tooth will make more noise when it the gear that is chipped. and less in others, or none. Jim

A Super A of mine sat all last winter. When getting it out for spring gardening its transmission was noisy. There was no knocking but just a lot of noise. After making sure the oil was at the proper level and a little exercise the noise went away. You may have a mechanical issue, or just a transmission needing a good lubricating since the tractor had sit a long time.
